One-day conference titled "Innovative and Novel Museums in Europe: EMYA Awards by the European Museum Forum. The Greek and International Experience" took place at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens on Monday, November 28, 2016, as a result of cooperation between NAM and Heritage & Museums and with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland to Greece.


The President of H&M, Heritage & Museums and a member of the European Museum Forum Board, Mrs. Lila de Chaves Chronopoulou and the Director of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens Dr. Maria Lagogiannis have co-organized the conference. During the event issues of special interest were presented, such as cultural evolution of museums in the European countries and the experiences of the winning museums, Greek and foreign, in the forty years since the founding of the EMF European Musem of the Year Award and Council of Europe Museum Prize – one of the most important institutions in the field of museums, founded 40 years ago by the British non-conformist museologist Kenneth Hudson.

The one-day conference was a big success: greeting were addressed by the General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Mrs. Maria Andreadaki Vlazaki, the General Director of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Mrs. Elena Korka, the President of H&M Heritage & Museums, Member of the Board of EMF Council of Europe, Coordinator of the national correspondents of European states Mrs. Lila de Chaves Chronopoulou, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Councilor Mr. Alexander Voudouris, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Mrs. Anna Barbarzak, President of the Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens Mr. Christos Tentomas, the former General Director of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Mrs. Vivi Vassilopoulou, a journalist Mr. Dimitris Trikas and a panel discussion was chaired by a writer and journalist Mr. Takis Theodoropoulos.


Important speeches and opinions, with the positive message for the development of museums for the benefit of societies were presented by the most distinguished colleagues from the museum field, including the honorary Director of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture Mrs. Ekaterini Romiopoulou, prize EMF, EMYA 1977, for the temporary exhibition "The Treasures of the Ancient Macedonia" in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the honorary Director of the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki Mrs. Anastasia Tourta, Council of Europe Award 2005 and the Director of the Archaeological Museum of Tegea Mrs. Anna Karapanagiotou, "Special Commendation", EMYA 2016.

Two special guests from Poland participated in the conference: the directors from Polish award-winning museums: Museum of the History of Polish Jews “POLIN” in Warsaw, EMYA 2016 and European Solidarity Center in Gdansk, Council of Europe 2016 Prize, who presented their awarded institutions to the audience.
